Clinical Research of Charleston

 

Clinical Research of Charleston is located in the beautiful city of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. We have six Physicians that are Board certified in Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep Medicine and Internal Medicine. All of our Physicians have extensive research experience as either a Primary Investigator or Sub-Investigator. We have 4 full-time Coordinators, two are Certified CRCs and all are IATA certified. Our coordinators have a combined 50 years of research experience and are proficient with most EDC systems.  


Clinical Research of Charleston (CRC) was founded May 2013, is owned by Selwyn Spangenthal, MD and operates under the American Health Research Network. The benefit to the pharmaceutical sponsors is that CRC offers an expedited start-up process by centralizing contract and budget processing at American Health Research. CRC has a quick turn-around time for processing regulatory documents and utilizes a Central IRB.

Our facility includes:

  • -20 freezer
  • -70 freezer
  • A large keypad secured study drug room
  • Secured cabinets and secured refrigerators for holding study drug.
  • Min/Max thermometers monitored daily
  • Large Patient Database (25,000+ patients)
  • On site lab with ambient centrifuge and CLIA already in place
  • refrigerator for specimens/drugs
  • Large storage area on site to house lab supplies and stored trials
  • Extra area for Meetings and SIV’s.
  • Local Lab and X-ray service available at Sponsor request; turn around results within a few hours of testing
  • WIFI
  • Spacious rooms with large table to spread out for monitoring

Monitors are able to schedule for visits Monday thru Friday and the office is able to accommodate weekend and 24 hour study visits if needed.

Our patient rooms are equipped with WIFI and televisions in each room for patient comfort.


Our Staff

Kimberly Bowers
Site Director, Clinical Research Coordinator

Kim joined Clinical Research of Charleston in June 2014 as a Clinical Research Coordinator.  She has previous experience coordinating clinical trials in pediatric and adult epilepsy, and has gained extensive knowledge of COPD and Asthma Trials since working at CRC. Kim became a Certified Coordinator in October 2015, and the Site Director in June 2015. She is married, has two rescued dogs, and enjoys exercising, participating in shooting competitions, fishing and eating.

Ali Dellinger
Clinical Research Assistant

Ali joined Clinical Research of Charleston in June 2017 as the Research Assistant. She graduated from Gardner-Webb University with her Associates Degree in Nursing. She hopes to further her career in research over the next few years. Prior to joining the research team, Ali gained experience working at Novant Health PMC in Charlotte, NC since 2012. Ali is originally from Gastonia, NC. She is married with a baby boy and dog-child. Outside of work she enjoys spending time with her family, crafting, college football (War Eagle), and the beach. 

Heather Richardson   
Clinical Research Coordinator  
Heather joined Clinical Research of Charleston in October 2013. She originally started with Clinical Research of Charleston as a Data Entry Coordinator and advanced to a Coordinator position in May 2014. She became a Certified Coordinator in October 2016. She has experience in COPD, Asthma, Cholesterol, and Postherpetic Neuralgia. Heather is married with one child. She also has two fur babies at home. She enjoys being a Mommy, watching Netflix, and retail therapy. 

Sarah Damewood
Clinical Research Coordinator
Lives in Charleston, SC since 1985. Married with 4 children and 2 grandchildren. Active in her church and loves her job. In 1987, Sarah graduated summa cum laude at the College of Charleston with a BS in psychology.  There she gained employment with the Department of Psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina as an administrative assistant for the Research Director and transitioned into Outpatient study coordination for the next 15 years in CNS trials. The next 10 years she moved into the private sector conducting clinical trials in Depression, Anxiety, Social Phobia, OCD, ADHD, Diabetes, Insomnia, Hypertension, Migraines, Cholesterol, COPD and Shingles PHN.  In May 2013, she joined Clinical Research of Charleston in Mt. Pleasant, SC and proceeded to earn her CCRC with the help of AHR. Sarah enjoys working with her team and striving to better the Research Environment in any way she can.   

Sheri Davis
Clinical Research Coordinator

Sheri joined Clinical Research of Charleston in Oct. 2015 as a Clinical Research Coordinator. She has twelve years of experience coordinating clinical trials in  COPD, Asthma, allergies, epilepsy, & stroke trials. She became a Certified Coordinator in March 2006. She helps with the patient visits and recruits.  She has 6 grown children, 9 grandkids, enjoys spending time with them, involvement in church and long walks in the park.


Our Investigators

Dr. James Carswell

Dr. Carswell is a graduate of Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina and The Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. He completed residency and fellowship training at The University of Virginia Health Sciences Center, where he first obtained experience in medical research. He holds board certification in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Sleep Disorders Medicine. He lives in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina with his wife and 2 sons.  He is currently serving as the main Primary Investigator at Clinical Research of Charleston.  

Dr. William Dawson

Dr. Dawson holds board certification in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease, Sleep Medicine and Critical Care. He is currently a Sub Investigator at Clinical Research of Charleston.  

Dr. Jason Gunn

Dr. Gunn holds board certification in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care.  He is currently a Sub Investigator at Clinical Research of Charleston. 

Dr. Steven Herndon

Dr. Herndon holds board certification in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care. He is currently a Sub Investigator at Clinical Research of Charleston.

Dr. John Mitchell

Dr. Mitchell holds board certification in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care Medicine and Sleep Medicine. He is currently a Sub Investigator at Clinical Research of Charleston.    

Dr. Graham Scott

Dr. Scott holds board certification in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine and Sleep Disorders Medicine. He has 28 years of research experience and is currently a Sub Investigator at Clinical Research of Charleston.
